Sexually transmitted diseases unfortunately are much more prevalent today than they were even twenty years ago. Back then it was also taboo to talk about sexually transmitted diseases, people pretended they didn’t exist or believed only “bad” people got them. Today we understand that anyone can get an STD and the only way to combat it is knowledge. Common sexually transmitted diseases and their symptoms are important for you to know for your own safety. It is also important to note that many sexually transmitted diseases have no sign of symptoms at all. Chlamydia is one of the most common STDs; the symptoms usually take about a week to three weeks to show. Chlamydia is a somewhat silent disease as a good percentage of those infected have no symptom at all. Those who do see symptoms will more than likely have pain while urinating, pain during intercourse and possible bleeding afterwards. Pubic lice more commonly referred to as crabs, like to burrow under your skin to feast on your blood. The common symptoms are itchy skin, redness or swelling of the area, and spots of blood. Crabs are easily passed from one person to another which not only can happen during intercourse, but by sharing clothes and towels or other articles of clothing that may have come in contact with the infected area. Gonorrhea is another of the more common STD’s, also known as the clap; it is a bacterial infection of the genital tract. This is another one of those silent diseases, more so in men than women. Symptoms can be burning when urinating, a discharge from the penis, or a discharge from the vagina, pain during sexual intercourse, and frequent urination. Unfortunately HIV is an STD that can kill, as there has been no cure found to date. HIV causes your body to not be able to fight off infection, viruses, fungi and bacteria, which can lead to AIDS, a life threatening disease. It is possible to have no noticeable symptoms with HIV. The most common symptom is a flu like virus, which includes fever, sore throat, and headache and fatigue; unfortunately these symptoms too usually disappear within a week to a month, much as the cycle of a common cold virus. As the virus multiplies in your system more signs may be forthcoming such as weight loss, diarrhea, and a cough. As it progresses you will see unexplained fatigue, night sweats, and chills with fever, chronic headaches and diarrhea. If you have any of these symptoms or have the possibility of having one of these diseases, it is recommended that you see a doctor for treatment as soon as possible to discuss treatments.
